


I wanted to explore who would volunteer to kill people to ensure that their leader stayed in power and why? How could they be the hero? How does our concept of heroic clash with social and political realities? Morality in fantasy worlds is really interesting to me. At the same time, I had an idea for pretty trope-y characters who were named after the rings on their queen’s left hand and did all of her assassinations so that she didn’t have to. Honestly, I just really wanted to read a book about assassins and characters who were well aware of what they were doing and dealing with the ramifications of their job. – Interview with Linsey Miller– What was the inspiration behind Mask of Shadows? Her most recent books are Belle Révolte, a French-inspired fantasy about two girls, one revolt, and unimaginable magic, and The Game, a YA thriller about a game of assassins that turns deadly in small-town Arkansas. Her debut duology, containing Mask of Shadows and Ruin of Stars, was about a genderfluid thief who fought their way through auditions to be the next royal assassin. She can currently be found writing about science and magic anywhere there is coffee. She is represented by Rachel Brooks of Bookends Literary and holds an MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction) from Wichita State University.
